Vanilla Solar just too plain?

Ok, let’s face it, who doesn’t like vanilla? It’s a wonderful base for all kinds of delicious treats. I use vanilla almond milk in my morning smoothie. For many, vanilla ice cream is the perfect complement to a slice of hot apple pie, and if you’re a purest like me, few things are better than a vanilla milk shake from the In&Out Burger drive through.

Yet, sometimes vanilla simply isn’t enough on it’s own, so we add chocolate sauce, whipped cream, nuts, berries, and rainbow sprinkles. Lately, I’ve been feeling that way about solar panels – just too vanilla a solution for many people. In fact, my feelings about solar have evolved quite significantly since I installed a system on my home in 2006. Back in those days, solar seemed the solution to so many of our energy problems. Customers typically had home improvement loans set up before they got their first solar bid. They were very interested in the brand of solar panel (Sharp, Mitsubishi, LG, SunPower, Kyocera); inverter (SMA, Enphase, SolarEdge. Fronius); racking (ProSolar, SnapNRack, Andalay, Zep); solar contractor (experience, warranty, references, insurance); and all things quality related. After all, they had to own this thing for 25 years, so quality and references mattered.

Enter the solar lease. Suddenly customers were told that the manufacturer of the panels, inverter, and racking no longer mattered. Even the contractor putting it all together was downplayed. After all, the solar leasing company has your back for 20 years, right? Vanilla solar became all the rage.

More interestingly, solar itself was de-emphasized. Instead, your friendly solar salesman sold you on a before and after electric bill payment. You may have heard this pitch, maybe even more than once. It’s goes like this: “Right now you’re paying $200, but after you lease this solar system your combined payment is only $165!”

Don’t get me wrong, here. Leasing is a good deal for some families, but unfortunately, it doesn’t give most families a comprehensive solution to their ENERGY CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. How do I know this?

The number one complaint I hear from solar customers after their first year living with solar panels is this: “I’M NOT SAVING AS MUCH MONEY AS YOU PROMISED! Your system is not working…” While on the surface this appears to be true, the truth is most often in the customer’s own mirror. Why would I say this?

After eight years and over 4,000 solar customers, we’ve found that over 99% of the time a customer complains about ‘not saving as much’ as they expected, they’ve increased their electricity consumption – sometimes significantly – in some cases UP TO 40% OR MORE!

Why? Since the solar design is based on a customer’s historic usage (generally over the most recent 12 months), the customer is often told that the solar array will offset a percentage of their electric bill – generally 80-100%. Of course, if you increase your total consumption by 40%, all of the savings estimates are out the window. If you signed a solar lease with an escalator, the savings loss could be even greater.

So why do many solar customers increase their electricity consumption after they go solar? Because they didn’t understand their consumption problem upfront – plain and simple. Therefore, they became less careful about turning off lights. They ran the AC more. They added an electric car, pool, home addition, or other large load.

If only someone had explained to the customer that consumption is MORE IMPORTANT than solar electricity production. The most satisfied solar customers take a three prong approach to eliminating their electric bill – they reduce their consumption, they install technology to keep the reductions in check, and they produce electricity with solar panels to knock out the remaining bill.
