Introduction to Solar PV

True or False: Power and energy are the same thing. Albert Einstein received the Nobel prize for the theory of relativity. Watts times Volts equals Amps. If you answered TRUE to any of those questions, you need to watch this session of HelioKids. HelioPower Senior Vice President, Jonah Liebes, provides a 5th grade level introduction to solar pv.

solar pv with HelioKids As engineers, we know the differences between power and energy, amps and volts, and fact from fake. When we started the HelioKids program, our mission was to ensure kids get the facts about energy in a truthful way. We let them know that it takes precious, non-renewable resources to create many of the things we use everyday. But energy should be from renewable sources whenever possible.

It takes non-renewable (but abundant) silicon to make solar cells and solar panels. However, by using those limited resources to manufacture sustainable, energy generation technologies, we can engineer a better future for our kids.

Students in the HelioKids Gate program study math and science every day at school. In our program, kids put their math skills to work by calculating the power consumption of light bulbs and the generation of a solar array. We show how a 100 Watt lightbulb, when on for 10 hours, consumes 1,000 watt-hours of 1 kilowatt-hour.

That's the same amount of energy consumed by a 1kW light on for 1 hour. Kids can relate to watts, kilowatts and megawatts just like bytes, kilobytes and megabytes. HelioKids encourages critical thinking and helps turn our children into the leaders of the future.

In our next installment of HelioKids, join us as we discover: Applications of Solar PV. From utility scale, solar power plants to off-grid water pumping and finally to Jonah's solar enabled, off-road safari truck, the HelioKids will experiment with ways to use and enjoy the power of solar photovoltaics.

More About HelioKids

Our HelioKids program teaches kids the basics of energy, solar powerJonah teaching solar PV for HelioKids and electricity from industry experts. The kids learn about concepts like static electricity, voltage, current, magnetism, etc. This is just a small glimpse of our educational sponsorship, so please contact us today for more information or if you think you're smarter than a 5th grader take our 5th grade solar PV quiz to see how much you know about photovoltaics.
