Introduction to Solar PV

As engineers, we know the differences between power and energy, amps and volts, and fact from fake. When we started the HelioKids program, our mission was to ensure kids get the facts about energy in a truthful way. We let them know that it takes precious, non-renewable resources to create many of the things we use everyday. But energy should be from renewable sources whenever possible.
It takes non-renewable (but abundant) silicon to make solar cells and solar panels. However, by using those limited resources to manufacture sustainable, energy generation technologies, we can engineer a better future for our kids.
Students in the HelioKids Gate program study math and science every day at school. In our program, kids put their math skills to work by calculating the power consumption of light bulbs and the generation of a solar array. We show how a 100 Watt lightbulb, when on for 10 hours, consumes 1,000 watt-hours of 1 kilowatt-hour.
That's the same amount of energy consumed by a 1kW light on for 1 hour. Kids can relate to watts, kilowatts and megawatts just like bytes, kilobytes and megabytes. HelioKids encourages critical thinking and helps turn our children into the leaders of the future.
