Home energy monitoring can drop the cost of your electricity bill
If you want to save money on your electricity bill, it pays to manage the energy hogs in your home, and the first step in managing energy hogs is monitoring energy hogs. To take control of your energy costs you need to know how much energy you’re using, and where. And, by the way…those costs aren’t trivial: HelioPower has a customer that is now saving almost $1,000/year with energy monitoring by Sense and a few tweaks to lifestyle.
Sense is a home energy monitor that tracks your entire home’s energy usage and identifies specific, individual devices in your home by their energy signatures. In the Sense app, you can see when devices turn on or off, and how much energy they are using. Sense integrates with smart plugs to track and control devices, and you can even use Alexa to talk to Sense.
Our customer bought an electric vehicle and decided he didn’t want to give the money he was saving on gasoline to the utility. Now, admittedly, our customer is an advocate of sound energy management practices and they’re all about reducing wasteful and unnecessary energy consumption in their home.
HelioPower’s customer installed Sense along with TP-Link Kasa HS110 smart plugs to monitor and reduce energy consumption. The Kasa HS110 seamlessly integrates with Sense to allow you to identify and track specific devices, know how much energy they are using, and turn them off remotely if they don’t need to be on. After you’ve done that a few times, you’ll want to set a schedule for those devices to save energy.
Simply turning devices on and off with the Sense app in hand, you can quickly figure out how much energy the devices in your home are using. Through a trial and error process, our customer found some unexpected energy hogs. Over time, Sense goes a step further, learning the energy signatures of devices in your home.
In the Sense app, you can set up alerts, so you know, for instance, when your toaster oven is on for more than an hour. With the smart plug integration, you can turn it off right from the Sense app. Being able to control the device from the Sense app is incredibly convenient and will be a very popular feature as more people figure this out.
